The breakout animated fantasy series Iyanu, based on Roye Okupe’s acclaimed graphic novel, has officially been renewed for a second season by Cartoon Network and HBO Max. In a major expansion of the franchise, two feature-length films have also been greenlit, cementing Iyanu as a growing global phenomenon. Image

A Record-Breaking Hit

Since its premiere, Iyanu has taken audiences by storm. According to Variety, the series has been watched by over 525,000 viewers to date. It became the #1 series among kids aged 2–12 on Cartoon Network and currently ranks as a top 10 kids & family series on HBO Max. The show’s compelling story, rooted in Yoruba mythology and African culture, has resonated with a diverse and global audience.

Following a strong reception from audiences worldwide, Iyanu will return with a second season composed of ten new episodes. The series, set in a magical realm inspired by Nigerian Yoruba mythology, follows a young heroine who discovers her divine powers and her destiny to save her people. The upcoming season promises deeper storylines, richer world-building, and elevated stakes.

“We’re incredibly inspired by the response to Iyanu and the connection it has made with audiences,” said David Steward II, CEO of Lion Forge Entertainment. “The opportunity to expand this world with a second season and two feature films is a testament to the power of meaningful storytelling and innovative creative collaboration. We’re grateful for the continued support of our partners at Cartoon Network and Max, and it’s been a lot of fun working with Roye to bring Iyanu to life and build the franchise.”

Feature Film 1: The Age of Wonders – Coming 2025

The first of two planned feature films is titled Iyanu: The Age of Wonders, and it is slated to be released later this year. This prequel will transport viewers 500 years before Iyanu’s birth, to a golden age of Yorubaland at the peak of its magical civilization. As the embodiment of the seven deadly sins threatens to plunge the world into chaos, the Divine Ones must unite with Iyanu’s predecessors to fend off the looming Age of Darkness.

“This is a huge win for Iyanu, Lion Forge Entertainment, and YouNeek Studios fans around the world,” said Roye Okupe, creator and showrunner of the series. “The support for our show has been nothing short of humbling—and because of that incredible response, we now get to bring the next chapter of Iyanu’s story to life. I’m thrilled to continue expanding the world of Iyanu and the YouNeek YouNiverse, and to share this journey with audiences across the globe. This is just the beginning.” Image

The second feature-length film is already in production and is set for release in 2026. While plot details are currently under wraps, it is expected to further deepen the lore of the YouNeek YouNiverse, continuing the legacy of culturally rooted storytelling with international appeal.

Produced by Lion Forge Entertainment in collaboration with YouNeek Studios and Dark Horse Comics, Iyanu is part of a growing wave of African-inspired animation breaking into the mainstream. The voice cast features an ensemble of African talent, while the show’s vibrant score and theme song—performed by Nigerian Afropop star Yemi Alade—enhance its authenticity and cultural resonance.

The show made its U.S. debut on Cartoon Network on April 5, 2025, followed by a streaming launch on HBO Max. It will roll out across 44 African countries via Showmax in June, and on ITVX in the UK and Ireland later this summer.
